Practical aspects of using wallpaper in New York City

Are you considering hanging wallpaper in your commercial or residential space?

1. Determine what  type of wallcovering you want to install.
There is a tremendous variety of wall covering / wallpaper available today. Here are a few, grasscloth, foil, mylars, flocked papers, flocked fabrics, hand screened designer prints, silk, hand painted silk, photo murals, digitally printed wall covering, string cloth, wood veneers, cork, fabric backed vinyls, commercial vinyls, pulp papers, embossed paper (anaglypta), natural fiber wallpaper, feather wallcovering, glass bead, mica schist, leather, fabric wallpaper.......the list goes on and on.
Within this diversity of  wall covering substrates we have and endless array of design elements, florals, damask, paisley, architectural elements, stripes, imitations of a myriad of surfaces such as brick, stone, wood.
Wallpaper is available in hundreds of thousands of colors. With the new digital wallcoverings  and murals the colors available are almost limitless.

If you like the look of wallpaper consider whats available in todays vinyl wallcovering.
The mere use of the word vinyl with put a scowl on most interior designers faces. Vinyl by some is considered to be tacky, a very old fashioned. I would encourage all  to reconsider.
Todays vinyl wallcoverings are not only affordable but are available in an array of chic and stylish finishes, textures and designs. Vinyl wallpaper is durable, stands up well in high traffic areas, can protect your walls from moisture (kitchens and bathrooms)

Many professional wallpaper hangers have long recognized the practical aspects of using vinyl. Vinyl wallcovering is easily removed. Wallpaper removal of many of the more delicate materials can be quite time consuming.

A tip for hanging commercial vinyl wall coverings in corridors and hallways.

Most commercial vinyl is 54 inches wide and is installed by overlapping the paper and making a "double-cut". This procedure is practically an industry standard. Here in NYC  some years ago we wallpapered a hotel and I made the suggestion to the hotel owner that  instead of hanging 54 inch material that we have the commercial vinyl "split"at the factory into 27 inch widths and shipped to us in 30-35 yard bolts. My reason for deciding to install commercial wallcovering in 27 inch widths was 1. At a future date when a hallway or room  wallpaper is torn or damaged the repair can be made quickly by simply removing the damages sheet/s and replacing them with extra paper (of the same run number as the original paper) When a wall is damaged with double-cut 54 inch material the repairs are more costly because you have to remove all of the vinyl paper to the nearest door or corner to reinstall with new double cuts.(patching 54" goods can look sloppy) 2. By working with 27 inch vinyl there is less waste (because of cutouts for doors and windows) and on a large sized commercial job that can be a significant saving on material for the building owner.
By using 27 inch vinyl instead of 54 in vinyl (where the pattern allows for splitting)  maintaining the wallpaper becomes much easier.

Using commercial vinyl wallpaper in your building hallways, foyer or lobby.

The selection of styles for commercial vinyl wall coverings has never been greater. Great strides have been made producing visual imitations of grass cloth, marble, stone, string cloth, faux finish, fabrics of all kinds in a durable 15 and 20 ounce vinyl wallpaper. The advantage of using these materials in building hallways and foyers is that they are durable and relatively inexpensive when compared to more delicate fabric and natural fiber wallcoverings.  A good quality solid vinyl wallpaper for commercial use can be purchased for  $12-16 dollars per single roll (30 sq. feet)  Paper and natural fiber wall coverings  are considerably more expensive generally costing $35  dollars and up per single roll.
In this blog post I am including photos of some of the rich finishes now available in vinyl wallpaper.

Using vinyl wall covering in building hallways and foyers

At wall covering solutions we are wall covering / wallpaper installation specialists. We work with building superintendents, co-op boards, management companies and building owners to assess your wallcovering needs.
Vinyl wallpaper has long been recognized as being a cost effective way to treat building hallways and and foyers.

Here are a few advantages of using vinyl wallcovering.

1.Durable. Vinyl wall covering installed in a hallway will stand up to "wear and tear" better than paint. Vinyl wall paper can easily last from 10-12 years. On the other hand, paint in hallways and foyers is something that must re-applied every 2 to 3 years.

2. Visual appeal. The selection of a vinyl wall covering with texture, pattern and color, greatly enhances the look and feel of your building hallway or foyer.

3.Sound barrier. With the simple use of a 15 to 20 ounce vinyl wall covering with texture, you can help reduce sounds generated in the hallways.
